Ajalooliselt kannab see piirkond Vadjamaa nime, viimaste aastasadade jooksul on see olnud halduslikult Ingerimaa v\u00f5i Peterburi kubermangu osa ning praegu kuulub Leningradi oblastisse. Vadjalased on elanud k\u00f5rvuti ning l\u00e4bisegi isurite ja venelastega, alates 17. sajandist lisandusid naabritena ingerisoomlased. Vadja keel on (p\u00f5hja-)eesti keele l\u00e4him sugulane, kuid selle k\u00f5nelejate hulk on v\u00e4ga kokku kuivanud. Kuigi n\u00e4iteks 2010. aasta Venemaa rahvaloenduse andmetel oli vadjalasi 64, v\u00f5is h\u00e4id k\u00f5nelejaid nende seas olla vaid k\u00fcmnendik. 2020. aasta rahvaloendusel nimetas end vadjalaseks 99 Venemaal elavat inimest (lisaks Eestis k\u00fcmme inimest), ent hoolimata pisikesest t\u00f5usust arvudes on tegemist endiselt ohustatud rahvaga.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1848. aastal loendas Peter von K\u00f6ppen Peterburi kubermangus kokku 5148 vadjalast. Vadjalaste ja virulaste omavaheline suhtlus pidi olema \u00fcsna tavaline. Narva linnas elavaid ja linna k\u00fclastavaid vadjalasi on korduvalt mainitud kirjalikes allikates aastatel 1432, 1544 ja 1549. 19.\u201320. sajandil on vadjalased kasutanud oma, vadjap\u00e4raseid nimekujusid n\u00e4iteks Narva, Narva-J\u00f5esuu, J\u00f5hvi ja Rakvere ning v\u00e4iksematest paikadest Vaivara, Vasknarva ja P\u00fchtitsa kohta. Narvas on vadjalased praegugi n\u00e4htavad \u2013 Narva Muuseumis on korraldatud Vadja Kultuurip\u00e4evi ning 2021. aastal avatud Narva Ingeri Majas k\u00e4ib regulaarne vadja kultuurielu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suhtlus on toimunud ka vastassuunaliselt. Kuna Vadjamaa j\u00e4i Eestimaa ja toonase Vene keisririigi pealinna Peterburi vahele, siis v\u00f5isid eestlased kuni 20. sajandi alguseni vadja rahvaga kokku puutuda juba ainu\u00fcksi pealinna k\u00fclastades. K\u00f5ige enam on neist andmeid Virumaalt, m\u00f5nev\u00f5rra ajalooliselt Tartumaalt (praeguste J\u00f5geva, Tartu ja Valga maakondade alalt) ning siit-sealt mujaltki. Siia elama asunud v\u00f5i muudel p\u00f5hjustel eestlastega kokku puutunud vadjalased on kohalikku kultuurip\u00e4randisse endast maha j\u00e4tnud terve rida j\u00e4lgi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Juba alates 1930. aastatest on arheoloogia andmetele tuginedes oletatud vadjalaste esivanemate p\u00e4rinemist Virumaalt. Valter Langi j\u00e4rgi v\u00f5is v\u00e4ljar\u00e4ndajate liikumine Virumaalt \u00fcle Narva j\u00f5e ida poole aset leida millalgi eelrooma ja rooma rauaajal (umbes 500 eKr \u2013 450 pKr), mil Isuri platoo l\u00e4\u00e4neosas levisid P\u00f5hja-Eestile iseloomulikud tarandkalmed. Ajapikku kultuurilised erinevused Eesti ja Vadjamaa rahva vahel suurenesid. Kindlasti s\u00fcvendas neid Novgorodi poliitiline m\u00f5ju kasv vadjalaste seas alates 12. sajandist ning sellega kaasnev slaavistumine, samas kui Eesti h\u00f5ivasid 13. sajandi hakul katoliiklikud ristis\u00f5dijad. Siiski s\u00e4ilis m\u00f5lema rahva kultuuris palju sarnast. N\u00e4iteks vadja pulmalaule anal\u00fc\u00fcsinud Ingrid R\u00fc\u00fctel on v\u00e4lja toonud terve rida eesti lauludega \u00fchtivaid jooni (motiivides, meloodiates ja esitusviisides), mida ta on p\u00f5hjendanud peaasjalikult m\u00f5lema traditsiooni p\u00f5lvnemisega l\u00e4\u00e4nemeresoome \u00fchiskultuurist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nooremal rauaajal (9.\u201313. sajand) ja eriti keskajal (13.\u201316. sajand) leidis aga t\u00f5en\u00e4oliselt aset r\u00e4nne Vadjamaalt Eestisse. Sellal levisid siin-seal Virumaal matusepaigad, kuhu on s\u00e4ngitatud ilmselt kusagilt Narva j\u00f5e tagant tulnud inimesed ja nende j\u00e4reltulijad. Andmed nii-\u00f6elda vadjap\u00e4rastest kalmetest on kokku v\u00f5tnud arheoloog Priit Ligi. V\u00e4lisilme p\u00f5hjal jagunevad taolised matusepaigad kolme t\u00fc\u00fcpi: 1) maa-alused p\u00f5letusmatused 9.\u201311. sajandist, 2) k\u00e4\u00e4bastega kalmistud 12.\u201313. sajandist, 3) maa-alused hauad, mida markeerivad maa peal kivipiirded ehk nn \u017ealnikud (14.\u201316. sajand). K\u00e4\u00e4paid on lisaks J\u00f5ugale teada veel Ida-Virumaalt Kurem\u00e4elt, Sootaguselt, Vasaverest, Kurult, Kuningak\u00fclast (viimasest on ka andmeid maa-alustest p\u00f5letusmatustest) ning L\u00e4\u00e4ne-Virumaalt Palasilt. \u00dcmara p\u00f5hikujuga k\u00e4\u00e4pad on kuhjatud liivast ning m\u00f5nikord \u00fcmbritsetud kiviringiga, kuid kive v\u00f5ib esineda ka kogumitena k\u00e4\u00e4pakuhjatise sees. K\u00e4\u00e4bastesse on reeglina surnud maetud p\u00f5letamata. Hauda on kaasa pandud peamiselt ehteid ja tarberiistu, harva m\u00fcnte, relvi v\u00f5i ratsavarustust. J\u00f5ugal leidub k\u00e4\u00e4baste k\u00f5rval \u017ealnikutega haudu, mujal Virumaal neid pole. K\u00fcll on nad v\u00e4ga tavalised kalmevormid ida pool Vene aladel, sealhulgas Vadjamaal. M\u00f5ned surnutele hauda kaasa pandud ehted, n\u00e4iteks kuljustega loomakujulised ripatsid ja naiste oimur\u00f5ngad, on samuti iseloomulikud idapoolsetele aladele. Vadjap\u00e4rastes kalmetes tavalised 12.\u201313. sajandi v\u00f5reripatsid on k\u00fcll hajusalt levinud \u00fcle Eesti, P\u00f5hja-L\u00e4ti ja Loode-Venemaa, kuid k\u00f5ige enam on neid leitud just Vadja- ja Virumaalt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00d5igupoolest on ida poolt Virumaale sisser\u00e4nnanute matmiskombestik k\u00f5ige sarnasem Oudova (Gdovi) piirkonnale, mis asub uusajast teada-tuntud vadja asualadest l\u00f5unas. Seet\u00f5ttu on Priit Ligi avaldanud kahtlust, kas Virumaale tulijad ikka olid k\u00f5ik vadjalased v\u00f5i leidus nende seas inimesi ka m\u00f5ne muu l\u00e4hedase l\u00e4\u00e4nemeresoome rahvar\u00fchma, n\u00e4iteks isurite seast. P\u00e4ris t\u00e4pselt me seda enam \u00f6elda ei oska, sest keskaegsel Liivimaal nimetati k\u00f5iki Narva j\u00f5est ida pool elavaid l\u00e4\u00e4nemeresoomlasi (sealhulgas isureid) vadjalasteks, samas kui Soomes ja Rootsis tunti sama ala Ingerimaana ja k\u00f5iki selle l\u00e4\u00e4nemeresoomlastest asukaid ingerlastena (st isuritena).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Matmispaikade levik n\u00e4itab \u00fcsna ilmekalt, et kui Virumaa p\u00f5hjarannikuv\u00f6\u00f6ndis valitsesid rauaaja l\u00f5pus eestip\u00e4rased muistised, siis vadjap\u00e4rased muistised levisid peamiselt Alutaguse l\u00f5unaosas. K\u00fcllap otsisid sisser\u00e4ndajad Virumaal vaba maad, mida Soome lahe \u00e4\u00e4rsel klindipealsel selleks ajaks juba nappis. Novgorodi kroonikas kirjeldatakse 1215. aasta suurt n\u00e4ljah\u00e4da, mil inimesed olid sunnitud paremate elutingimuste otsinguil kodust lahkuma. Sel ajal v\u00f5iski neid suuremal hulgal tulla Virumaale, kuid kindlasti esines sisser\u00e4nnet varem ja hiljemgi. Kui uusasukad olid end uues kodus sisse seadnud, muutusid nende kombed ja kultuur ajapikku sarnaseks muu Eestiga. <u>Kirjalike allikate<\/u> p\u00f5hjal otsustades p\u00fcsisid nad v\u00e4hemalt keskajal veel eriilmelise etnilise r\u00fchmana. 1330. aastal on mainitud T\u00e4rivere talupoega Thoyuodas Wadi. Vene Nikoni kroonikas on Liivimaa s\u00f5ja alguses 1558. aastal Vasknarva foogtkonnas elavate rahvaste seas nimetatud ka <em>\u0411\u0430\u0442\u044b<\/em> (ilmselt saksakeelse <em>Waten<\/em> j\u00e4rgi), kelles v\u00f5ib \u00e4ra tunda vadjalasi. 1583. aastal Voka k\u00fclas elanud viis talupoega lisanimedega Waddtelain<em>, <\/em>Wattilain ja Wattilane olid arvatavasti samuti vadja p\u00e4ritolu, ehkki nemad v\u00f5isid tulla Virumaale ka alles Liivimaa s\u00f5ja (1558\u20131583) p\u00e4evil.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[*]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vadja asukatele v\u00f5ivad osutuda ka m\u00f5ningad Kirde-Eesti <u>kohanimed<\/u>. Neid on anal\u00fc\u00fcsinud tuntud vadja keele ja rahvakultuuri uurija Paul Ariste. Tema hinnangul kajastavad <em>Vai<\/em>-t\u00fcvelised topon\u00fc\u00fcmid vadja vanemat sisser\u00e4ndelainet Eestisse \u2013 ajal, mil vadjalaste rahvanimi v\u00f5is kanda veel kuju <em>vajjalaine(n)<\/em>. Kirde-Eestist on Ariste j\u00e4rgi taolised n\u00e4iteks muinasmaakond Vaiga, kaks Vaiatut (\u00fcks Torma, teine Kadrina kihelkonnas), Vaek\u00fcla ning kaks Veiat. Hiljem arenes etnon\u00fc\u00fcmist <em>vajja <\/em>vorm <em>vad\u2019d\u2019a<\/em>, mis on eesti keeles muundunud <em>vadi<\/em> kujuks. Sellet\u00fcvelistest k\u00fclanimedest t\u00f5i Ariste v\u00e4lja Vadi Torma kihelkonnas ja Vadik\u00fcla V\u00e4ike-Maarja kihelkonnas, samuti terve rida Vadi-nimelisi talusid Ida-Eestis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pannes need topon\u00fc\u00fcmid kaardile koos arheoloogia andmetega, saame veidi ise\u00e4raliku pildi. Kui vadjap\u00e4rased kalmed koonduvad eelk\u00f5ige Alutaguse l\u00f5unaossa, siis Ariste v\u00e4ljatoodud topon\u00fc\u00fcmid asuvad L\u00e4\u00e4ne-Viru ja J\u00f5geva maakonnas, j\u00e4\u00e4des justkui v\u00e4ljapoole sisser\u00e4nnanute tuumikala. V\u00f5ib-olla on p\u00f5hjus selles, et seal, kus vadja asukaid elas koos kompaktsemalt, ei pidanud nad vajalikuks elupaikasid oma rahva j\u00e4rgi nimetada. K\u00fcll aga v\u00f5isid seda teha eestlastest naabrid, eriti kahe rahvar\u00fchma kokkupuutealadel. Sedasi v\u00f5iksid <em>Vai<\/em>&#8211; ja <em>Vadi<\/em>-t\u00fcvelised kohanimed markeerida justkui eestlaste ja vadjalaste kunagist omavahelist piiriv\u00f6\u00f6ndit. On k\u00fcll osutatud, et k\u00f5ik <em>Vai<\/em>-algulised kohanimed Ida-Eestis ei pruugi kaugeltki olla seotud vadjalastega. V\u00f5imalus neid Ida-Viru paiku vadjalastega siduda j\u00e4\u00e4b siiski alles ning seda on m\u00f5ni uurija ka teinud, n\u00e4iteks Vaivara puhul Priit Ligi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Viimaks puudutame p\u00f5gusalt <u>murdekeelelisi<\/u> ja <u>rahvakultuuri<\/u> andmeid. Virumaal kunagi laialt k\u00f5neldud kirderannikumurde idaosal on mitmeid \u00fchisjooni nii vadja keele kui ka Peipsi-\u00e4\u00e4rse eesti keele idamurdega. \u201eK\u00f5ige vadjap\u00e4rasemaks on peetud L\u00fcganuse, J\u00f5hvi ja Iisaku kihelkonna ning Vaivara kihelkonna l\u00e4\u00e4neosa murdeid, kus esineb n\u00e4iteks sage <em>\u00f5<\/em>-h\u00e4\u00e4lik <em>o<\/em> asemel (eriti L\u00fcganusel ja J\u00f5hvis), <em>v<\/em>\u00a0on kujunenud algsest\u00a0<em>uh<\/em>-\u00fchendist (<em>j\u00f5vi<\/em>\u00a0\u2019j\u00f5hv\u2019,\u00a0<em>javatama<\/em>\u00a0\u2019jahvatama\u2019, vrd vadja <em>javamaa<\/em>) ning eitusverb on p\u00f6\u00f6ratav (<em>min\u00e4 en<\/em>,\u00a0<em>sin\u00e4 et<\/em>\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0<em>te ette<\/em>,\u00a0<em>n\u00e4m\u00e4d eiv\u00e4d<\/em>).\u201c Vadjalikud jooned ei pruukinud siinsetesse eesti murretesse sugeneda pelgalt aegade jooksul sisser\u00e4nnanud vadjalaste sulandumise t\u00f5ttu idaeestlastesse, vaid ka pikaaegse omavahelise l\u00e4vimisega.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Virumaa rahvariietest on k\u00f5ige vadjalikumad jooned Iisaku kihelkonna nn poluvernikute ehk poluvertsikute r\u00f5ivastel. Iisakumaa abielunaiste pear\u00e4tt <em>pavoi<\/em> on etnograaf Aino Voolmaa t\u00e4helepanekute p\u00f5hjal sarnane vadja ja isuri <em>sabana<\/em> nimetust kandva pear\u00e4tiga. Meeste ja naiste jalar\u00e4ttide s\u00e4\u00e4reosad olid poluvernikutel ja vadjalastel m\u00f5lematel pikkade ribadega. Uurijad on poluvernikuid pidanud vadja sisser\u00e4nnanute j\u00e4reltulijateks, kes aja jooksul keeleliselt venestusid ning seej\u00e4rel eestistusid, kuid selles k\u00fcsimuses on \u00f5igupoolest veel \u00fcksjagu lahtist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">M\u00f5ned vadja ja viru rahvakultuuride \u00fchisjooned on leitud ka setode seast. Paul Hagu on nimetanud setode kommet j\u00e4tta p\u00f5lluvilja l\u00f5ikusel viimane vihk l\u00f5ikamata ning ennustada seal olevate putukate j\u00e4rgi tulevast \u00f5nne, mis on olnud tuntud ka Kirde-Eestis, sealhulgas Virumaal ja P\u00f5hja-Tartumaal, samuti Vadjamaal.
